Welcome to The League!
Photography for good, not evil…sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? We believe photographers can be a force for good in the world, using their photography, their personal way of seeing the world, to focus – in a helpful way – discussion and dialogue about contemporary issues facing humanity. And what better vehicle than art to encourage us to reflect on our place in the world and how our actions cause changes to the landscape around us!
Why a League?
Why a league, you ask? When trying to find a way to ‘do better’ with our own photography, Darwin and I knew that there were other photographers out there frustrated with the lack of respect people were showing toward natural places. Landscape photography – our industry – seemed especially egregious in its emphasis on consumption: consumption through the constant purchase of the latest gear, consumption in the form of rabid travel to remote places for a ‘trophy’ image on the digital wall and consumption of energy in being constantly plugged in to devices and distant from nature. But we didn’t want to tell people what to do. We wanted people to think for themselves, question their own values and actions. We wanted to create guidelines not rules, a recipe not a prescription. We wanted to hang out with people who felt the same way.
A group of people from separate backgrounds, different cultures and even sometimes opposing values banding together for a higher common purpose… that’s cool! A league it had to be.
League is the voice of the League of Landscape Photographers. It is the platform upon which their projects are shared with the world. It is the way League members are rewarded – both professionally and monetarily – for making their art. While there are many magazines that publish nature and landscape photography, there are none that specifically use photographic art as a tool to make us more mindful and ethical in our approach toward nature.
There is no publication like it. And it’s coming this spring…
