Makin’ a Magazine…She Ain’t Cheap

Some people think we are crazy to make a magazine.

They might be right. In an era when digital is making the print industry eat dust, it seems almost foolhardy to invest in a high-quality art magazine. And our projected expenses reveal that there are significant costs to designing and publishing.

Clocking in over $30K, and no staff paid yet…! Yikes.

A more realistic budget is our ‘Chubby Budget” which gets all Creatives paid with reasonable rates.

The traditional magazine publishing industry relies on a combination of subscription sales and advertising revenue to meet their costs. Yet, one of the biggest impacts of digital has been the migration of advertising dollars from print to online media. On the other hand, with a plethora of content of all kinds and quality on the web, it can be frustrating for consumers to find valuable, timely and accurate information.

So, perhaps we have an intersection here…. If we do not rely on advertising revenues (and the consequent influence on content and style in the magazine) but offer discerning readers an engaging, thought-provoking publication that is itself a work of art, perhaps enough people will subscribe and cover publishing costs. And if the magazine also meets a demand in the industry as a reputable, quality outlet for the excellent art of ethical photographers…

A 2015 (online!) article by Rena Niamh Smith of the UK’s The Telegraph reported on the boom in niche magazines:

Beautifully curated and printed on thick, uncoated paper, these tomes are more than just magazines: they are luxury products for a discerning reader, a respite from the frenzy experienced by the always-on generation. This is a revolution against the digital revolution, an organic farmers’ market to rival the supermarket culture of online media.

We’ll have started our fundraising campaign. We believe with passion and drive, we’ll get there. Subscribe and show you believe!

I applaud you for your latest undertaking. How exciting!! I cannot help financially due to my own financial circumstances (but will when I can). However, if there is anything else I can do, let me know.

Hey Blanche, we really value your support. Your comments are support enough but if you love the cause just help by spreading the word… you do so much in the community already. Keep up the good fight.

    Hi Darwin and Sam,

Congratulations on takling on an old subject. This has been debated since the development of photography.

I like yourself has always beleived, “Photography is Art”. However, Milk is Milk straight from the cow, but has you add more water it gets weaker and weaker. This is the state of photography today. It has gotten weaker because of the numbers.

I would like to support you when you are ready. I would also like to be involved somehow – may be as a contributor. I don’t know if bird photography would fit into your concept.

Keep me informed as to your progress.

    David

      Hi David,

Any wildlife photography can fit into the League group, we just want ethical capture 😉 As far as the League magazine, we see wildlife photography as applicable in the context of the landscape. Show wildlife in the land and make it a project and personal to you and it is League worthy!
